I’m not the savviest of technology-versed individuals. In fact, it tends to be a joke not to let a phone or a computer get into my hands or I might break it for whatever odd reason. However, I still live and function in the world of technology and I can tell you that it’s nice to take a break every once in a while. Unplug.
Unplug from technology, unplug from the grind, unplug from your goals, your tasks, and everything that must absolutely get done before 5 pm. And then everything that that must absolutely get done before midnight. And then the everything that could have gotten done, may need to get done, and in those half-awake half-asleep dreams that everything that twists itself into things that you must absolutely get done even though you have no idea why.

The other day I was exploring the grocery store, trying to find myself a suitable snack to have in the interim of my classes. As I did, I was reminded of how alarming the “food” we eat can be in terms of its effect on our health, with ingredients such as BHT, a cancer-causing agent, tagged on to a long list of ingredients.

This got me thinking about what, in fact, causes cancer and illness in general in the first place. In the classic model of biology, we are taught that certain stimuli are known to “turn on” cancer genes and everyone carries in them some number of cancer cells. Only when this cancer cell production is uncontrolled does cancer itself become more rampant and destructive in the body. More

I like the idea of leap years. Unless you are something like Mr. Groundhog, running away if circumstances don’t suit him (the February version of the Grinch, if you ask me), you probably do too. Yes, the calendar is technically just a measurement. Yes, one extra box doesn’t necessarily actually add up to an extra day of life… but there’s still something a bit exciting about the idea of one EXTRA day. And one day dedicated to LEAPING, at that.

Have you ever experienced the slowing down of time? -those moments when minutes seem to collide and seconds are infinitely longer than the breaths you take? The slowing down of time can sneak up on you, catch you off guard when you were busy tumbling through the race of tasks and deadlines. A moment of illness can bring your awareness back into your body. A moment when you are told that a loved one’s life is measured can shock you awake. And you move into molasses, your life frighteningly more still than before.
Can you and do you have the courage to stand still? To feel all the emotions that beckon to awaken you? Do you need a significant, frightening moment to make you slow down or will you take the time to enjoy and be in every moment? More

Life can be a bungee jump, the untrodden path, diving into cold water at sunrise. Sometimes its unexpected turns take the breath away… but then again, it’s at that point that you learn how to breathe to the fullest again. The feeling of failure, or perhaps just the fear of it, comes to all of us. When it comes to your bungee jump into life, what is it that you are afraid of? What is it that is holding you back?
When you feel the fear of failure or are hurt from its bite just remember: you bear within you all the potential of the universe. More

There is something magical and oh-so-peaceful about snow falling and flying from a deep and veiled sky; something about the cover of a endless white created by a countless number of snowflakes- each one of them with a different set of wings, each one of them beautiful and perfect. The universe replicates itself at each level of existence and if we pay close attention, we can come to know how these same stories of winged snowflakes are told inside each of us.

“Like snowflakes, the human pattern is never cast twice. We are uncommonly and marvelously intricate in thought and action, our problems are most complex and, too often, silently borne.” -Alice Childress More

January beginnings. Are you starting fresh? Are you starting anew? January resolutions. How are they going? Are you feeling strong about the changes you are bringing into your life? Whatever your resolution, there are specific steps you can take to ensure that you stay on the path you have set out for yourself and reach the goals you are working to achieve. Just as with any task you set out to accomplish, the first step in reaching a goal is awareness.
